What is plastic surgery?

The word "plastic" is derived from the Greek word plastikos, which means to shape or mold. Plastic Surgeons specialize in performing procedures to reconstruct defects due to disease, trauma, and birth defects. Plastic Surgeons are also specialists in performing procedures aimed at improving their patient's physical appearance and self-esteem.

Facial Questions

Are there any non-surgical options available to give my face a more youthful appearance?

We offer a number of non-surgical options to give your face a more youthful appearance including: Botox®, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, topical medications, and collagen, or fat injections. These options can often produce dramatic improvements in your appearance, but may not be a substitute for more traditional methods of facial rejuvenation-such as facelift and laser resurfacing. Dr. Rowley can help you determine whether your expectations can be realistically achieved with these less invasive options.

What is Botox® Cosmetic?

Botox® is the trade name of commercially prepared Botulinum toxin initially developed in the 60's for the treatment of various neurologic disorders. In 2002 Botox® gained FDA approval for cosmetic use in the treatment of the wrinkles between the eyebrows. Botox® often provides dramatic results, is proven safe, and is associated with little to no downtime. Its biggest disadvantage is its lack of permanency. In order to maintain your result repeat injections will be necessary every 3 to 5 months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is:
A Botox® Cosmetic treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent line between your brows that developed over time. One ten-minute treatment - a few tiny injections - relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to four months. Botox® Cosmetic has been widely tested.

The results are dramatic and apparent within days. In clinical trial, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, Botox® Cosmetic virtually “erases” these lines.

Unlike surgery, Botox® Cosmetic is fast, simple and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed. With Botox® Cosmetic, they'll know you've done something, they just won't know what.

BOTOX® Cosmetic isn't:
Botox® Cosmetic is not magic. It's medicine, the result of years of careful research and testing. Allergan's Botox® product is the only one of its type with over 10 years of success in treating patients with a variety of conditions. With dosing specific to treat frown lines, this same product is now available as Botox® Cosmetic.

Botox® Cosmetic will not radically change your appearance or make you look “like you've had work done.” It will not make you look twenty years younger. Because its highly localized and administered intramuscularly, its effects are usually confined to the region of injection, and Botox® Cosmetic does not remain in your body indefinitely.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic right for me?

If doing all you can to look your best is important to you, Botox® Cosmetic may be for you.

If reducing those tough lines between your brows would make you feel more approachable, Botox® Cosmetic may be for you.

Thousands of appearance-conscious women and men have already discovered the benefits of Botox® Cosmetic. Not just models and movie stars, but ordinary people - teachers, mothers, and business people from all walks of life.

I want to have fuller lips. What are my options?

Lip augmentation involves the injection or implantation of the patients own fat or various natural or synthetic materials to create fuller lips. Lip augmentation can also be very effective at reducing the fine wrinkles around the mouth often referred to as "smoker's wrinkles". The two most commonly used materials are collagen and the patient's own fat. Collagen injections may require pre-testing in which a small amount of collagen is injected into the forearm one month prior to the procedure to insure the patient will not have an allergic reaction. Results are immediate and usually very gratifying, but tend to be short-lived, lasting 9-12 weeks. Augmentation using the patients own fat is done by harvesting fat from another area of the body using liposuction, and injecting the fat into the lip. This technique does not require pre-testing, and usually produces longer lasting results.

What is microdermabrasion? What are its benefits?

Microdermabrasion is one of the newest techniques available for skin rejuvenation. This procedure uses neither surgery nor chemicals to give the skin a healthy more youthful appearance. The procedure is non-painful, and works by removing dead skin using a fine spray of aluminum oxide crystals. It stimulates the production of healthy new skin cells and collagen. Microdermabrasion is effective in reducing fine lines, age spots, and some acne scars. Treatments take from 20-30 minutes to perform. Between 4 and 10 treatments, spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart are recommended for maximum results. Maintenance of results requires periodic repeat treatments after the initial regimen is completed. We use the MD Peel Platinum® which is the most technologically advanced equipment available. This system is more powerful than those found in spas, and is only available to qualified physicians. To learn more about this and other skin care treatments, visit our section on Skin Care.

What is laser resurfacing?

In laser skin resurfacing a laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Often, the procedure is done in conjunction with another cosmetic operation, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery.

What can be done for the bags around my eyes?

As we age, fat accumulates around the eyes, and the surrounding skin and muscle becomes stretched out causing “bags” above and below the eyes. These features may make you appear older and more tired than you feel, and may interfere with your vision. Blepharoplasty, the technical name for eyelid surgery, is the surgical removal of excess fat, skin and muscle around the eyes. Blepharoplasty often produces dramatic results, giving most patients a more alert youthful appearance. This is one of the procedures which falls in the gray zone with regard to insurance coverage. Upper eyelid surgery may be at least partially covered by your insurance if you have excess eyelid skin which obscures your vision.

What can realistically be accomplished with a facelift?

The technical name for a facelift is rhytidectomy, which means the surgical removal of wrinkles. A facelift is designed to improve the visual signs of aging from below the eyes to the neck by softening deep creases, removing excess fat deposits, and tightening the soft tissues of the face and neck. Facelift can be done alone or in combination with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or forehead lift. The best way to determine whether a facelift can address your desires is to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Rowley.

I don't like my nose. What can be done? Am I a good candidate?

Rhinoplasty is the surgical reshaping of the nose. Some of the areas that can be corrected with rhinoplasty include:

  • Removing a hump from the bridge of the nose
  • Narrowing the width of the nose
  • Elevating a drooping tip
  • Making a tip less bulky and better defined
  • Straightening a crooked nose
  • Making the nostrils less flared
  • Shortening the length of the nose

If you are considering surgery for any of these reasons, rhinoplasty may be right for you.

What can be done to make my ears less prominent?

Otoplasty is the surgical correction of prominent ears. The procedure usually involves the placement of a small incision on the posterior ear. Through this incision the surgeon can remove or sculpt the cartilage, and place sutures to pull the ears closer to the head. Most patients are extremely satisfied with their results.

Breast Augmentation Questions

I am considering breast augmentation. What are some indications that I am a good candidate for this type of procedure?

Some of the more common reasons women consider breast augmentation are as follows:

  • A feeling of self-consciousness when wearing tight-fitting garments or swimsuits
  • Loss of breast tone or volume following pregnancy
  • A change of breast size or shape following weight loss
  • A perception that your upper body figure is proportionately smaller than your lower body
  • A noticeable size discrepancy between your two breasts

If you are seeking breast augmentation for any of the above reasons, chances are you are a good candidate. Dr. Rowley would be happy to assist you in determining whether breast augmentation can realistically meet your desires and expectations.

If I have a breast augmentation how soon can I return to my normal activities?

Recovery from breast augmentation varies from woman to woman. However, some general guidelines are as follows:

  • Most women are up and about within 1-2 days of surgery
  • A minimum of 2-3 days should be devoted to rest and relaxation devoid of any house chores or work responsibilities
  • Dressings can be removed and you will be permitted to shower within 24 hrs of surgery
  • Most discomfort is experienced in the initial 48 hrs following surgery, and is usually well controlled with
oral pain medication and/or muscle relaxants
  • After the initial 48 hrs there is usually some residual feelings of tightness or muscle cramping. Most women report a near complete resolution of all discomfort within two weeks of surgery
  • You will be asked to wear a support bra for 23 hrs a day for the first six weeks
  • Lower body exercise can usually resume within two weeks of surgery
  • You should plan to refrain from upper body exercise, i.e. pushups, lifting greater than 20 lbs for about six weeks following surgery.

I have decided to have breast augmentation surgery. What decisions will I need to make with regard to the actual procedure?

Once you have made a decision to proceed with surgery there are several other decisions you will need to make, including:

Incision Site Options:

  • In the breast crease
  • Around the nipple/areola
  • Through the arm pit

Implant Positioning Options:

  • Under the breast tissue
  • Under the chest wall muscle

Dr. Rowley will go over the benefits and drawbacks of each of the above options to help you make an informed decision.

Will I be at increased risk for developing an auto-immune disease if I have breast implants?

There have been a number of large studies that have demonstrated that women who have breast implants are not at significantly increased risk for developing auto-immune diseases.

What are the risks of breast augmentation surgery?

Every year thousands of women undergo breast augmentation. The overwhelming majority of women have no problems and are extremely satisfied with their result. However, as with any surgical procedure there are certain risks associated with breast augmentation. Some of the potential complications include bleeding, infection, scarring, adverse reactions to medication, changes in nipple sensation, and capsular contracture. The best way to fully understand the risks and benefits is to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Rowley. He will be happy to provide you the information you need to make an educated decision on whether breast augmentation is right for you.

Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Questions

I can't seem to get my tummy in shape despite diet and exercise. Should I have a tummy tuck or liposuction?

There are several factors that will determine which of these procedures is the right one for you. Liposuction can produce very good results in individuals with good skin tone and a tight abdominal wall. Individuals with lots of excess skin and those with a stretched out abdominal wall will usually need a tummy tuck to adequately address their needs. The best way to determine which of these procedures is right for you is to schedule an examination with Dr. Rowley.

Can liposuction help me loose weight?

Liposuction is not intended to be a method of instantaneous weight loss. The best candidates for liposuction are individuals who are relatively normal weight who have isolated areas of fat that have been unresponsive to weight loss and exercise. Some of the areas that are particularly amendable to liposuction include:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Outer and inner thighs
  • Buttocks and hips
  • Upper arms
  • Neck
  • Calves and ankles

How much will my cosmetic surgery cost?

To get an idea of the average surgeons fee for various cosmetic procedures, you can visit:

Average Surgeon Cosmetic Procedure Fees

Please note that these are national averages determined by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Based on these statistics our cosmetic pricing is extremely competitive. Since we are not located in a high rent district, we are able to offer our procedures at significantly lower rates. This cost savings does not mean that you will be sacrificing quality. Dr. Rowley is fully trained in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, and is committed to providing you with the best possible result. Prior to committing to any procedure you will have a personal consultation, and will be provided a complete quote as to exactly how much your procedure will cost.

Is plastic surgery covered by insurance?

Procedures performed to improve function or to restore normal appearance to acquired defects are considered reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by insurance. Procedures performed solely to enhance ones physical appearance are considered cosmetic surgery. Most insurance companies will not share the expense of cosmetic procedures. However there are certain procedures which fall in the “gray zone” between cosmetic and reconstructive and may be eligible for at least partial coverage. Dr. Rowley and his staff would be happy to help determine whether your insurance is willing to assist in payment of your procedure.
